A letter to the King

Many Jordanians have been publicly addressing letters to King Abdullah II since the beginning of 2011. Examples are the letters of Laith Shbielat, Radwan Al Nawayseh, Lahib Bani Sakher, and “A Jordanian Citizen“. We’ve also seen numerous statements of opposition or allegiance from different groups in recent days.

What about you, what would you write in a letter to the King? What messages do you want to convey?

I am sorry, I dont see anything funny here, regardless of what I personally think of the comment itself. but why did you choose to put all Jordanians of Palestinian origins in one category? why did you think they ALL have to side with the opposition? I believe this is another stereotype that uses generalization. Not all East bankers are loyalists, as the stereotype goes, similarly, not all Jordanians of Palestinian descent oppose the monarch, regardless of what I think of the comment, but I don’t see the point of trying to understand it from that perspective, especially that a large number of Jordanians of palestinian origins served as chiefs of the royal court, as senators, ministers, orime ministers and were known to be loyalists. Again, this is just to say that there is no category under which all of the palestinians can be identical.

        • Faisal86

neither me! let’s chiil out and wank together if you feel mouldy

Don’t waste your time with such people. I think ma7moud lacks IQ. Who your ancestors were 100 years ago is irrelevant and does not imply how you should feel about this or that, including opposing the regime.

Holding on to such ridiculous notions is, in my opinion, one of the biggest problems we face as a people. It truly showcases just how insanely absurd we are. Imagine, two groups of people who I cannot describe in any other way than being essentially brothers, and yet, they are part of a country that is still dealing with an “identity issue”? Are we serious? There are countries in this world that have populations made up of people who have different origins, skin color, and religion. And yet we, palestinians and jordanians are as different as two sides of a coin, are still saying such comments and reflecting such absurd thoughts after all these years?

it’s 2011. we have a struggling economy, a poor and unemployed population, the region is going to hell, people are taking to the streets – and we’re still concerned about what family the Queen belongs to and what she eats for breakfast.

something is seriously wrong with our priorities.

      • Abdullah A. Aggad

oh wow… that is good…. i agree with you completely …

      • http://twitter.com/MohannedA Mohanned Al-arabiat

Not that I agree with maha’s comment, but I find it absurd that you chose to make the reply about identity. While it might be true that most of the attacks on her majesty are identity driven that doesn’t mean that demands for transparency and accountability should be simply shoved under the carpet because it is “3eeb” or the motive might be identity driven.

As a matter of fact I’d rather see the queen’s policies be more prominent in JO’s political and social environment.

Fact is, the era of secrecy and unaccountability is over. Asking people to “control” their perceptions is simply absurd. You encounter and fight rumors by complete transparency. Office holders and those who carry titles must disclose all their assets.

We can no longer afford this lack of transparency. For the sake of JORDAN!!

        • Anonymous

Who’s shoving anything under the carpet?

Transparency and accountability? Sure! No problem. I’m all for it, and I’ve called for that endlessly…you already know that.

But such statements are clear attacks on a person based on their origin, and to say them while meaning something completely different is to be aloof of common perceptions, especially those alive and well in the media.

If someone was really concerned with the accountability and transparency issue in Jordan, such a statement is not the way to go about it and only serves to showcase that there are other intentions on the mind.

          • http://twitter.com/MohannedA Mohanned Al-arabiat

aloof or not.if the goal is both transparency and accountability then the method people choose to express are their own.. origin or not..it doesn’t matter at this stage..what matters most is tackling what is fueling such perceptions and the growing identity crisis.

Remember that leadership is about making the right choices..it doesn’t matter if the yacht trip was simply a loan from a friend..what matters is that a choice was made to take that offer and go on the trip at a time where people were suffering as you mentioned above. It doesn’t matter if the louis vetton hand bag is worth 10,000 or 150,000, what matters is that a choice was made to buy that bag..private life and the public’s perceptions are a fact of life.

Lets focus on the enablers and the lack of leadership. Lets focus on the frameworks that inflame the identity wars.

          • Anonymous

fine. perfect. brilliant. you are essentially saying that the monarchy should be held accountable for its expenditure. correct? this is what you are saying that maha is calling for? right? awesome.

now, please explain to me how maha’s comment are reflective of that opinion.

if what you claim is true, then putting that in the context of maha’s comment i see her saying it is true for only one part of the establishment and not the other. and if that is the case then that is a racially-driven perspective.

            hence my issue with it.

          • http://twitter.com/MohannedA Mohanned Al-arabiat

Go back to my first comment:
“Not that I agree with maha’s comment, but I find it absurd that you chose to make the reply about identity.”

I am not defending maha,so please let’s not do this. She has a right to say whatever she wants. What she said is her own opinion. Identity wars were enabled by something and someone(s). Identity wars are fueled by the choices and the policies that are not pursued by me, but by the regime and the state.

Your response to Maha will simply divert our attention from the core problem.

          • Anonymous

I agree she has a right to say whatever she wants. But this doesn’t mean that what she says is correct or irrefutable by others who have an opposing opinion such as myself – an opinion that I too am entitled to.

Secondly, identity wars may be enabled by a system but it is the people who are largely responsible for buying in to them and fanning the flames. We may not be responsible for certain state policies but we are responsible for our own thoughts, beliefs, words and actions. What we think and how we express those thoughts are reflective of that. We can either choose to be a people who seek only to polarize certain segments of our society and rip the strangs of our own social fabric to pieces – or untie. No government can do that for us – no law can make that happen for us.

Lastly, I agree that this is a diversion and while I initially hesitated to respond due to that realized fact, I did so because allowing such comments to go by unopposed and unchallenged is what has helped get us in this mess in the first place.

            thanks

          • Maha

To all the above …i didn’t accuse the queen with anything “disgusting” i just said that she is the queen not the king and her family is not royalty so there is no reason Jordanians should pay their bills. Our grandfather’s pledged allegiance to this country and the Hashmites so why are al yaseen and al rasekh benefiting like they own the country? This has never happened with any queen before. Why is her family entitled to government land and property? why and how are they getting rich?
i didn’t say anything about the queen or her family being of Palestinian origin so don’t twist my words. i don’t care if the king has 4 wives each from a different planet!!
Her origin is not the issue i care about the spending ..we have a struggling economy, a poor and unemployed population, the region is going to hell, people are taking to the streets so the queen should at least be discrete about her lavish spending and not compete for glamour awards for best dressed. her majesty visits a poor family in a refugee camp in an outfit worth tens of thousands!! her birthday bash could’ve educated thousands. a yakht ? the jewelry? rumors about an island ? of course people are gonna compare her to suzanne mubarak and layla trabulsi and no they are not out of line.

            TBC…

          • Maha

            continued…
I’m for accountability and transparency for all in everything but until we get there and establish an actual limited budget for the royal court at least some sensitivity and consideration in a world of too information and no discretion. Jordan is a poor country but the king and queen have the 2 most expensive A340? Why?cause we can afford it? when they go from country to country to rally support and funding for Jordan doesn’t anyone say to them hey downsize your jets and that’s 200 mil in your country’s pocket? are they business and PR trips or shopping and award trips? shouldn’t our foreign affairs minister be handling ummm foreign affairs.

And about those visits to the poor people..why is it that the king has to visit maan and the queen has to visit a refugee camp? what is that implying? He’s their king you are their queen?? I’m against those visits ALL together cause improving the country is not a royal decree out of HM generosity on a whim. it is the government’s job to so if you actually have to go there for a photo op or so someone’s roof can get fixed you should re consider your entire court and government. When was it ever a king’s job to buy blankets for someone!

P.S. Naseem you are the one who turned this into “you criticize the queen cause she’s Palestinian” not me.

          • Faisal86

friggin double faced! if she Bh or anything begins with b, it would be perfectly fine (according to you!) if she takes everything.. just because they “own it” ~ you are full of hate to her, do not justify or clarify your hate and color it to look like you are worrying about citizens money.. the 90% of gov employees are of jordanian origin, yet corruption is the biggest eater of jo money, not what the queen and her family (in total less than 100 person) are who eat the money!

          • Maha

first 2 lines and last 2 lines make no sense to me!
I don’t know her to hate her…what is known of her to me is not very lovable or in the best interest of the country. As for the corruption in the government it is rampant ..look all around we have ministers becoming millionaires in a few years. I spoke about the Queen because Nassem and others brought it up. Jordanians Palestinians Egyptians ..what’s the difference? are you stupid enough to think that one group is more prone to corruption than others? like a genetic defect? the root of corruption is the lack of accountability not where someone is from.

          • Faisal86

not a genetic inheritance or defect! its just about the believe of owning everything (or sharing it) by default! have a look here: http://www.khaberni.com/more.asp?ThisID=50051&ThisCat=1 this is one of the biggest issues “sha3bak” is encountering.. whatever the queen does or did, is a fraction to what “sha3bak” is doing! the above example is nothing to what the media do not show ;-) you need to live between them to see the misuse and the advantage taking of everything, just because they are east jordanians.

ps. im lebanese, so i do not care, i just say what i see!.. i like jordan and its people but i hate to see them moaning about something they do themsleves.

          • Faisal86

oh by the way, i forgot to ask for a proof from your side that the aal yaseen have ripped off the whole country, or maybe part of it ;-) awaiting the evidence, especially with the law that say you can access all information at plot registration dept.. show me anything mentions any of the yaseens in any of the lands, and i promise to hold my peace forever!

or just show me a MoI report about the nutralization of palestinians (the 67,000) who got the jordnaian nationality by her /office help… i bet you are listening to bunch of “3ajayez m5afeneen” who call themselves, ma5ateer!

          • Struggling Jordanian

I must agree with Maha on some points. When I saw Glamour women awards and saw that there were only actresses and singers and in the middle of these people we find Her majesty. I really don’t understand what is she doing with those bling bling people. We never see queens, princesses and first ladies participate in such events, because it is not their place. But her majesty does, and the dress that she wore to receive the award didn’t cost 100 JD for sure.
A link to the people who participated in the event and their photos with the dresses.
            http://www.glamour.com/fashion/blogs/slaves-to-fashion/2010/11/glamours-2010-women-of-the-yea.html

Such awards for her majesty doesn’t make us happy or proud as Jordanians, but only reminds us that while she is winning this award most of the Jordanians are struggling to finish the month with average salaries of 200-300 JD.

          • Ms.Z

            Jordanians Palestinians Egyptians..what’s the difference?

i think that your first comment was “على الملك أن لا ينسى ان الاردنيين بايعوا الهاشميين مش ال ياسين ”
i think that you are a racist … and double faced.

      • Anonymous

throwing around such labels is useless and harmful to the debate. i would recommend you either elaborate where someone you claim has contradicted themselves to deserve such a label, or, better yet, engage.

        thanks.

        • Urdony

you seem like a person who can read both arabic and english, and I hope you can understand what you read. When you throw words glorifying someone when that someone does not deserve even an iota of it, that is called Nifaq wa dajal meant to suck up to the person being undeservedly glorified and thanked for heroic acts they did not do. Understand now, dear Mr Tarawneh?

        • Urdony

by the way, if it makes you feel better, when I wrote my reply to Maha thanking her, I have not even read your comments, so I was not referring to you… yet :). I now have to go and real all comments.

          • Anonymous

My comment was not posted as a perception of you calling me specifically a munafeq but of you calling ANYONE a munafaq to begin with! I do not pass judgment on you brother, and I do not think you have the right to pass judgment on anyone else. Only God has that right.

Secondly, like I suggested, if you have something to present that point out contradictions or alleged hypocrisy, then present it. If not, then engage those you disagree with. Throwing around labels is unhelpful to a constructive conversation.

But that is of course only if you are a citizen who is genuinely concerned about having a constructive conversation instead of accusing people of things.

Equality, that says it all. But as long as have the “identity’s question”, this equality will never come into effect. every segment will feel targeted. So we have to find a real solution that addresses root causes, find equal participation for all in both sectors, so that noone can claim he/she is alienated because of their origin, be it in private or public sector. we also need to start listening to each other, because most of the stereotypes we hold of each other will be shattered as soon as listen. We need to stop this cycle of hatred, it is harming US, all of us. I do not want to become a minister, at least not in the near future, I do not want to run for elections, but I shouldnt be denied this right for any reason. I shouldnt start questioning my allegiance to Jordan because of these comments. some beliefs have to be changed, we have to challenge the misconceptions. Most importantly, we have to let everyone know that not all Palestinians fall into one category neither do all East bankers. So step no1, dont generalize. Step no2, Jordanians of palestinian origins were granted Jordanian citizenship following the unity in 1950, at the time, noone said it was temporary, the right of return was safeguarded, but the nationality wasnt meant to be a temporary status. the list goes on, so many stereotypes that can be easily shattered when we look around us. but unfortunately, we are just too coward to admit. That’s not all, but the identity’s question is really deterring all kinds of reform, because of this polarization and because i dont think people will be committed and contribute to the fullest, if they are being reminded every day of these tensions. But at the same time, I understand there is no immediate solution, but it starts with dialogue. It is also ironic, because I have the feeling that when we start this dialogue and maybe start to talk about all of these stereotypes, probably all of us do know and realize, but maybe we are just not couargeous enough to take action. so we hold on to those beliefs.

@All What you are discussing is very valid and important but I hate how we sometimes we don’t stick to the purpose of the post “A Letter to the King” I feel everyone should be able to send any letter he/she wants to the King without being judged or blamed. I imagined this wall to be letters to the king displaying ppl hopes and thoughts . We shouldn’t always feel compelled to comment. after these discussions I wonder if some ppl will want to send a letter to the King under this post . Guys please don’t feel discouraged write your letters …

I say to his Majesty the King that we Jordanians are quite smart people and we think we are ready for democracy. That said, I still think the throne is essential part of Jordan and a unifying factor. So, a constitutional monarchy sounds like a good deal for Jordan.

  • http://twitter.com/Jordanstar Jordan Masoud

Guys this is not about one person and one family, this is about Jordan. We do need more focus on Jordan and more nationalism towards our country. This nationalism is not the fake passion we show during a 90 minute soccer game, it is one that is displayed in our actions and works. It needs to be transparent in our politicians, businessmen and government. We do need an investigation into corruption on a larger scale and we do not need to blame an employee that stole 10 thousand JD, waste our resources trying to make him look like “THE VILLAN” while we have individuals that are gambling with our national security by stealing millions. Let’s not play a blame game and start fixing things right now. (BTW I was in Jordan during summer world cup and people were as passionate about Germany and Brazil as they are about the Jordanian National Team which is why I see this passion as Fake because it fades when the current shifts directions)

i am going to give it a shot :

    Dear king abda allah

would you please please show your face on the tv with a decent speech and address our hopes and fears instead of bombarding us with a million ” bina2an 3alla tawjeehat jalaltoo ” you seem to be giving alot of tawjeehaat without a destination !

second of all yes i would like to see you and the royal family acting less extravagantly or to make it even fairer how about not to show us how good you have it , since things are abit tight right now ! i dont wanna see you and your wife shopping in san trope or chilling in the spanish sun not that i dont want you to be happy it’s just because I am plain old jealous !

third of all WTH your majesty you dont have to keep changing your cabinet its not a must, how about you give any of your guys some time to do his job before you sack his ass , i mean you dont have to worry about your position most people acknowledge the fact that we are a kingdom so just chilll !! no one is after your chair / piggy bank / job /position .

fourth of all how about you get a grab on the situation and respond to those people who want to insult you, but find it easier to insult your wife because she is a palestenian ,i mean i hate alot of things about her majesty but going after her by stupid so called shyoo5 is just wrong and represent an ” IN YOUR FREAKING FACE ” kind of an act !

ok this is all i can think of right now ,,, not to mention the financial issues that would take 3 years to talk about because of your policy !!

    best regards
    your humble forced servant

    peace

    To the beloved King,

    Some humble advice:

    - We don’t need all these spending on arm force, who are we protecting ourselves from?
    - Make use of the army in internal projects (Deasy Project, Cleaning national parks)
    - The “peace process” as an idea is great; however it didn’t work for the past 15 years, trying a different peaceful path wouldn’t hurt (boycotting, international tribunal, publicity )
    - Crackdown the tribal power system (even though it’s part of our heritage it should be modernized to eliminate the hideous influence they impose on government and citizens)
    - The government should be a role model to all citizens in many ways such as spending and preserving our scar resources.
    - A political reform, which includes a transition of great powers and responsibilities to the people, should be clear in content with a time line of a maximum three years.

Thank you and May God bless our country.

    Another worried Jordanian,

    Your Majesty King Abdullah ll,

A Jordanian people elected priminister, so we can fire his a** when his government screws up, so we dont have to bounce hopelessness and confusion off walls all day.

Queen Rania is not responsible for the stupidity and ignorance of the tribes.. Neither is she responsible for the corruption..
The stupid tribes hate her only because she is Palestinian.. and they only hate Palestinians because they know they deserve more opportunities than they are given.. and they like to keep taking opportunities they don’t deserve only because they belong to a TRIBE..!

If people decided to move in Jordan they will move, now it is much easier after Tunisia and Egypt. We must all remember that for the first movement in Egypt, 18 days ago, there was 15000 people and 30000 policemen, and this didn’t intimidate the movement. 30 years of oppression with Egypt’s emergency law where Moukhabarat tortured and killed so many people, at the end people’s will was stronger than all that.
So I really don’t understand how choosing Bakhit to militarise our streets will make people scared. He was a prime minister before, and did nothing, why would he be better now. Rifai had his share of being a prime minister simply because he is from the close circle of HM. Now after he finished his work, and after having a quick look of what he did, I can only wonder what is the added value that he brought, and what did he do, a part from having the status of a prime minister like his daddy and filling his ego, he did nothing.
When people don’t have anything to lose, they will move, they can’t feed their kids because basic necessities are expensive in Jordan, they can’t keep them warm because petrol is expensive, and they can’t educate them, because today going to college is actually a luxury in Jordan. People will revolt, and there will be no difference between Jordanians or Palestinians as some might think, everyone will move. We don’t want to change the regime, we support the royal family’s existence, but absolute power shouldn’t belong to one person, we want a change in laws, we want to elect our prime minister and not have him appointed simply because he is a friend or because he knows how to make people scared. But before that we want to teach people how to lead a democratic process, how to create political parties, and we want people’s voice to be heard.
If the people’s will is to have a strong representation of the Islamic movement , why not, then let’s educate our people to know how to apply a modern Islamic law and let them have their share from the cake. Oppressing them for 30 years in Egypt wasn’t successful after all, but maybe if we let them speak openly and even participate in politics, it would be easier to control fanatism, anything that is hidden ends up in fanatism, so let them speak.
Ben Ali’s fortune was estimated at 5 billion dollars by Forbes magazine, but some other sources say it is estimated at 12 billion, Moubarak’s fortune is estimated to be 30 times more (around 70 billion dollars). I don’t understand how a responsible chief of state could have that amount of money and accept that his people die of hunger. I don’t mind that kings and presidents would be billionaires and have all the money they can ever spend until the day they die, but I want to tell them live and let the people live, and don’t be blinded by absolute power and money.
So my message to HM, respect Jordanians and let them live with decency and we will support you.

When the people of Jordan stop naming them selves “Original Jordanian”, and wehdat and faisaly teams closed, and we make a law that account any one who mention the origin just like a Nazi in Germany, and when we leave the 3asheereh influence behind ..

Then I will send him a letter.

  • Hashem Al Tal

    Letter to self:
    1. Education & cultural orgs in Jo need to immediately start debate programs so that human beings in this country get this conversation out and work through it while we’re growing up in the safety of our campuses and learning spaces. Once we’re out into the world and these issues are not resolved in our person and collective, there’s little hope IMO.

    2. Prediction: socio-psycho-analysis will become a thriving business in JO real soon.

    3. Auto response from King: Return to sender, kindly start a blog instead. Thank you.

” This is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism. Now is the time to make real the promises of democracy.”
    From MLK’s I have a Dream Speech

I have a dream that one day, not very far off, I shall wake up in the morning, and join Jordanians from all walks of life, demanding change and democracy.
I dream of streets filling up with Jordanians, men and women, marching from every city, town, village and refugee camp. From Ramtha and Aqaba, From Baqa’a to Wihdat, From the downtrodden east to the affluent west of Amman. All chanting in one voice, to reclaim our destiny and future.

On that morning a new day will be born; a day in which, we the people, can transform the desert of Jordan into an” oasis of freedom and justice”.
The freedom we seek is the freedom to choose our representatives who in turn choose the PM. The freedom to write an offensive poem, to express a different opinion or even a stupid one without fear of arrest. The freedom to go to bed Jordanian with the confidence that you will wake up Jordanian. The freedom from “dual nationality” and “ dual loyalty”. Freedom from nepotism, secrecy in the affairs of the state as well as the lies which we are fed up with and fed constantly. Freedom from torture being outsourced to Jordan. Freedom from the war on terror, which is not our war. Freedom from American” aid”, for services rendered. Services , the majority of Jordanians will, simply, reject to perform. Freedom of long held taboos. The freedom we seek is the freedom to direct our own destiny.
I have a dream. I dream that one day Justice in Jordan will reign supreme. Justice, under which, all Jordanians are equal, regardless origin, creed, relations or position. Justice, under which corruption will be fought systematically not selectively. Justice, under which a government official will leave office when caught lying, not live to lie another day. Justice, were the laws of the land are respected by all, and no one is above it.
In my dream, I saw my seven year old son a university student, who is very well versed in democracy, Justice, due process and the rule of law, and I knew, he learned all that from our generation.
I saw all that happening and a lot more…..What’s your dream? What are you doing about it?

I address my loyalty to the #Hashemite family, though the problems within the country & who has an authority using it to his personal needs.
Every1 should know that Jordan won’t work or be stable or be ruled without the Hashemite royalty & the whole family, but what we need is to change & fix the internal issues with the parliament & ministries. thats it.

i believe that the attack on the queen and her brother and uncle is all just our own Intelligence agency`s plan B, as the wave of “Liberation” heats up, the throne feels it nearing rapidly, which calls in for a drastic, drastic measure.

Jordan, being as it is, split into ,god knows how many percent Eastern & Western Jordanians, and the Queen being from a Palestinian origin, has always witnessed public expressions of hatred and disgust with the fact that they are now being governed by one of their eternal nemeses.

having put you in the right perspective, all the commotion and, the allowance of such voices to be made public for the first time, you can sense the formation and strategy behind Plan B.

WHEN push comes to shove, the simplest way for the throne to be preserved is simply by scapegoating the very figure that no one had ever thought touchable, which will gain back the loyalty and allegiance of the tribes and Eastern Jordanians forever, they would have never thought that their King would ever give them what they wanted, their scape goat.

I thought I’d read letters of suggestions regarding the future of our country. where people will be mentioning what needs to be done regarding constitutional reform, or what actions needs to be taken to improve our educational system, methods to implement to improve tourism or improve the standards of living in Jordan and more other issues that are of urgency.
On the contrary I was shocked to find discussions about ” Who is a jordanian” and ” What origin” or discussing personal issues about the king and queen.
I’m sorry but please allow me, a person that holds jordanian citizenship is jordanian no matter what origin he has and is/should be loyal to Jordan. The king and queen represent our country and yes the respect of the queen comes from respect to the king, it’s an international protocol like it or not. Agree or disagree with many of the government policies they both represent an excellent image of Jordan and jordanians abroad and believe me this is important and vital for Jordan.
Yes there should be reform in many areas and lots needs to be done, but this is everyone’s responsibility and in order to start we have to let go of all trivial issues and concentrate on vital ones, put a reasonable and practical plan and start working on it.
Other than that we will be having long discussions resulting in endless arguments and we’ll be going in a vicious circle..
We do not have to agree on minor issues we all need to agree on the main issue and that is let us all take part hand in hand all jordanians that love their country and believe in a better future for their country..
We can do that cannot we ????
