Short Films and Live Music in Amman This Week

July 7, 2013

Films made by youth from the Talbiyah Palestinian refugee camp will be screened at the Rainbow Theater today. The short documentaries are the by-products of the Palestinian Memory Documentation Project, established by young counters and members of the Women Program Center in the Talbiyah Camp. Talbiyah’s elderly people were interviewed in order to document the various stories and recollections of Palestine before 1948.

The one-year old Juthoor band will give a concert at Al Balad Theater, performing classical and folk oriental pieces as well as original compositions for some of its members. This musical project was set up in the hopes of reinventing instrumental tradition in the Arab world. The five-piece band is composed of Nasser Salameh (percussions), Abdul-Wahab Kayyali (oud), Khalid Balawi (cello), Mohammed Tahboub (violin), and Ghassan Abu Haltam (clarinet). (Monday at 8:00 pm)

Bala Feesh will bring together singer/songwriter Hana Malhas and composer/guitarist Odai Shawgfeh of El Morabba3 this week in a low-key and unconventional live show at Kharabeesh offices. Bala Feesh is a new musical project offering a monthly series of informal live shows and unlikely collaborations with different musicians in bare and open settings, all caught on tape. (Saturday at 9:30 pm)

Macadi Nahhas is also giving a live performance at Bargo’s cafe (Saturday at 10:00 pm)
