“Forbidden Childhood”

Barbara Cupisti, 90 minutes, Arabic and English, Documentary, 2008.

In the USA, Ali Abu Awwad – a former resistance fighter in the first Intifada, now a leading member of the pacifist movement “Al-Tariq” – and ex-Israeli soldier Elik Elhanan – a spokesman for the association “Combatants for Peace” – try to find a solution to the conflict through dialogue and non-violence. The film is a cross-section view of the struggles, sorrows and hopes of young activists who fight for a better future.

Set in Palestine and the USA, this film illustrates also the experience of Palestinian children living in a world of everyday violence, with no future.

“Forbidden Childhood” has received the Audience Award for the Best Documentary Film at the Bahrain International Human Rights Film Festival in 2009, and the Amnesty International Cinema and Human Rights Award at the Pesaro International Film Festival for the New Cinema (June 2009). UNICEF Italia also gave the film the High Patronage.
