Events in Amman, May 8 – 14

Attention music fans! Three great shows by local independent musicians are taking place – on the same day! Autostrad will be launching their new album at the opening of the JARA Market on Friday. Abdel Wahab Kayyali and friends return for a second encounter of classical instrumental Arabic and oriental music, and Tarek Abu Kwaik/El Far3i is performing on Friday as well, as part of a special show for Press Freedom with other local artists.

If you’re into classical music, you’re in for a treat; on Saturday, more than 100 Singers and 60 Musicians from Jordan’s multi-national “Dozan wa Awtar Singers” with the visiting “Damascus High Institute of Music’s Symphony Orchestra and Choir” will be performing Mozart’s Requiem, his last and greatest choral masterpiece.

The Zakharef in Motion dance festival continues with performances from the Netherlands, France, Jordan, UK, Germany, and the US. This year Europe Day will be marked by an collaborative Jordanian/Dutch/French urban dance performance, preceded by a screening of an experimental short film by Youssef Kawar. The Holland Festival also continues with two film screenings at the Royal Film Commission and other activities.

7iber is organizing a special edition of the Hashtag Debates in collaboration with the WANA Forum, Monday evening at the Kempinski, where we’ll be discussing the political and economic impact of foreign aid in the Middle East pre- and post-Arab Spring. Don’t miss it.

The Free Theater Annual Festival kicked off and will continue until May 12. Watch this space for updates on the full schedule of plays as soon as we get a hold of it.
