Making the Tate More Modern

Chris Dercon joined Tate Modern as Director in 2011. Dercon is an art historian, documentary filmmaker and cultural producer. In the late 1980s, he was Programme Director of PS1 Museum, New York, before becoming Director of Witte de With, Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam. From 1996 until 2003, he was Director of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam where in 2001 in the exhibition ‘Unpacking Europe’ he presented a work by Rachid Koraïchi—in homage to Ibn Arabi—first shown at Darat al Funun.

Dercon curated exhibitions for the Venice Biennale and the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. In 2003, Dercon became Director of the Haus der Kunst in Munich. From late 2010 to early 2011 the Haus der Kunst hosted an exhibition of Arab modern and contemporary art ‘The Future of Tradition – The Tradition of Future.’

In 2011, an exhibition entitled ‘Out of Place,’ a collaboration between Tate Modern and Darat al Funun was shown at Tate Modern. Tate’s Middle East North Africa Acquisitions Committee support the acquisitions of work by artists originating from these regions. More recently, Chris Dercon has been working on the contemporary art scene in Saudi Arabia and was published in Contemporary Kingdom: The Saudi Art Scene Now by Canvas.
